Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of interacting galaxies located 200 million light years away in the constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -5 degrees. The main disk spans 30 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 30,000 light years. But the overall span of the star stream is 150,000 light years.

I love the contrasting colors of this pair. It looks to me like the main galaxy, in yellow, is being distorted by the small companion galaxy, in blue. Note how bright the arm with the companion is, compared to the opposite arm. I imagine that over time these 2 galaxies will merge. Dr. Arp classified this object in the category of Galaxies with Narrow Filaments.

The beautiful face-on grand spiral galaxy to the lower left is 2MASX J04533482-0448443. It is 1.4 billion light years away and has a diameter of 100,000 light years. Below this galaxy is a fascinating chain of tiny distant galaxies which descends down to a edge-on spiral galaxy at the bottom of the page.
